NCAA Basketball...Marquette Suffers First Big East Loss

South Florida took Marquette down with the same formula other teams have used to pull the upset trick this week: defense. South Florida held the Golden Eagles to 4-24 from beyond the arc and 31% shooting from the field. On top of that, Marquette certainly didn't help themselves out by going 10-23 from the free throw line. Jerel McNeal led Marquette with 22, while South Florida got 21 from Jesus Verdejo.

The loss snapped Marquette's 12 game winning streak, and was their first in Big East play. They're now 9-1 in conference play, still good enough for first place. Marquette's been having a great season thus far, but losing to a bad team can hurt your psyche. Now is when we can see just how good Marquette really is. Depending on how Marquette responds to the loss in the next game (Tues. @ Villanova) will determine how the rest of their season will go, and whether they remain a threat to make serious noise the Big East and NCAA Tournament.
