Rev Run's Son, JoJo, Caught Rollin Up...

The son of legendary rapper Joseph "Run" Simmons of Run DMC was arrested for possession of marijuana on Friday night, according to published reports.

Joseph "JoJo" Simmons Jr. allegedly bought weed and was seen rolling the illegal substance in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, according to gossip news site tmz.com.

Sources within the police department told the site that the 19-year-old was inside a car when he was apprehended.

The sources also charge that he tried to escape by reversing and almost struck a police vehicle.

Simmons Jr. was charged with resisting arrest, attempted reckless endangerment, and criminal use of drug paraphenalia in addition to the possession charge.

No statement has been issued by the Simmons family or a representative.

Simmons, Jr. stars on the show "Run's House" with his father and the rest of the family.
I'm not even mad at him. He'll be aight...

NBA Playoffs...

Round 2...

Scores...

Celtics 96, Magic 117 (Magic Lead 2-1)
Rockets 108, Lakers 94 (Lakers Lead 2-1)

Top Performers...
  • Dwight Howard - 17 points (on 7-8 shooting), 14 boards, 5 blocks.
  • Rashard Lewis - 28 points, 6 rebounds.
  • Paul Pierce - 27 points, 6 assists, 3 boards, 3 steals.
  • Kobe Bryant - 33 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks, 2 steals.
  • Ron Artest - 25 points, 6 rebounds.

Things To Think About...
  • The formulas for Boston and L.A. seem clear: Ray Allen must shoot well for Boston to win. Last night: 8 points, 3-13 from the field, 0-5 from deep. In L.A., Kobe must take the initiative  from the get-go (i.e. Games 2 & 3) in order for the Lakers to win. That "team-first" mentality was great during the year, but its the playoffs now. I think he's figured that out...
  • The NBA's back. If you can't tell, just observe the physical play.
Former Detroit Piston Coach, Chuck Daly, Passes Away...

Daly was voted one of the 10 greatest coaches of the NBA's first half-century in 1996, two years after being inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He was the first coach to win both an NBA title and Olympic gold.

NBA Playoffs...

Round 2...

Scores...

Hawks 85, Cavs 105

Top Performers...
  • LeBron James - 27 points, 5 assists, 4 steals, 3 rebounds. In less than three quarters...He hit a jumper - not a heave - from 40 feet to go into the half.

Things To Think About...
  • Again, the Cavs have a cakewalk to the Finals.
  • Should it be cause for concern that: 1. The Cavs are yet to be tested, and 2. That no one else has really had a big game for Cleveland.
Suspensions...

In case you didn't know, Derek Fisher and Rafer Alston will both be sitting out tonight after their respective Game 2 actions. Kobe Bryant will not be suspended (and he shouldn't be).

NBA Most Important Player...

No, there's no official award for the Most Important Player. But there should be. Typically, the MVP goes to the best player on the best team in the league, and rightfully so. However, there are players who have tremendous impacts on their teams, although they may not have the gaudiest stat lines. They change the "culture" of a team. Last year, it was KG changing the culture of the Boston Celtics.

This year, Chauncey Billups deserves the award. No player has meant more to his team. Obviously, the Pistons downfall is a clear indication of his importance, but his impact on Denver is even more telling. For years the Nuggets have been defensively challenged, giving up 100+ on the regular. After trading their top defensive player, Marcus Camby, in the offseason, many thought the Nuggets were prone to get lit up for 150 on a nightly basis. Despite their offensive firepower, first-round exits were the norm in the Mile High City.

Then they picked up Chauncey Billups. Yeah, trading A.I. and his 30 shots a night was helpful, but it's bigger than that. It's not like Billups' stats are ridiculous - he's put up a solid 17.7 points and 6.4 assists, and Melo's 23 PPG is down from his 25 last year. But with Chauncey at the point, the offensive operation is SO much more efficient: J.R. Smith and Nene, are both averaging career-highs, at 15.2 and 14.6 points per night, respectively. The defensive end, though, is where the largest strides have been made. This year, the Nuggets are 19th in opponent points per game, giving up about 100 points per night. Not great, but a hell of an improvement for a team that was next-to-last last season, surrendering over 107 points per night, and traded gave away the leagues best shot-blocker.

Chauncey was the steady rock they need at point. He exemplifies the importance of PGs in basketball. He came in, settled the Nuggets down on O, convinced them that, to win, they had to D up, and CHANGED THE CULTURE. The results are clear: 2-seed out West, and they're playing better basketball than anybody in the L right now.

Big ups to Chauncey. This year's NBA Most Important Player.
Runner up: Mo Williams.

Dave Bing Wins Detroit Mayoral Election...

Basketball legend Dave Bing was elected Tuesday as Detroit's mayor through the end of the year, sweeping the incumbent from office in the city with myriad problems.

"The real work starts now," Bing said to loud cheers during his victory speech.

"What we will bring ... is efficiency, transparency, honesty and integrity back to the mayor's office," he said.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Bing had 52.3 percent of the vote, or 49,054 votes, to 47.7 percent, or 44,770 votes, for Cockrel. Both are Democrats.

Bing, 65, will be mayor through 2009, serving the balance of the term that belonged to Democrat Kwame Kilpatrick, who resigned in September and went to jail after admitting he lied during a civil trial to cover up an affair with his chief of staff.

Bing must run again in the regular Aug. 4 nonpartisan primary and win the Nov. 3 general election to hold the mayor's seat for a full four years.

Full story here.

This is huge for the D. Check out the Jemele Hill story I posted last week about Bing's background and his quest to fix Detroit.

Man Who Robbed Antoine Walker Gets 21 Years...

A West Side man was sentenced to 21 years in prison Tuesday for ambushing former NBA star Antoine Walker in his River North garage before tying him up with duct tape and robbing him.

Antoine Larkins, 30, is also accused of robbing the New York Knicks' Eddy Curry in a similar stickup at Curry's Burr Ridge home. That case is still pending.

In the July 9, 2007, holdup of Walker, Larkins and three other men were charged with armed robbery, kidnapping and home invasion.

On Tuesday, Larkins, of the 1300 block of South Washtenaw, pleaded guilty to the home invasion charges in a deal reached with prosecutors, Cook County assistant state's attorney Andreana Turano said. Judge Kenneth Wadas issued the sentence. In March, he sentenced Larkins' co-defendant, Gregory Reedfields, 24, to four years in prison.

Also charged were Phillip Allison, 30, and Demorris Hill, 27. Their cases are still pending.

In the holdup, Walker, then with the Miami Heat, pulled into the garage of his $4 million home and was met by the masked robbers. The Mount Carmel grad was ordered out of his SUV. As he opened the door, $3,000 in cash that was apparently sitting on his lap fell out and was grabbed by Larkins, authorities said.

Hill and Larkins marched Walker at gunpoint to an upstairs bedroom while Allison waited downstairs to nab an assistant of Walker's, authorities said.

The gunmen forced Walker to reveal where his money and jewelry were kept, duct-taped him to his assistant, and put them in a closet, authorities said.

They were told to count to 100 before making a move. Allison returned to the bedroom twice -- once to make them restart their 100-count, and a second time to ask how to drive Walker's Mercedes.

Allison allegedly stole the Mercedes and put the SUV's $8,000 rims on his girlfriend's 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, authorities said.

I've got a couple questions here: What fool has 3 stacks sitting on their lap while they're driving? And what fool goes and puts the stolen rims on his girl's whip? WOW...

NBA Playoffs...

Scores...

Hawks 72, Cavs 99
Mavs 105, Nuggets 117

Top Performers...
  • LeBron James - 34 points (in 34 minutes), 10 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists.
  • Dirk Nowitzki - 35 points, 9 rebounds.
  • Carmelo Anthony - 25 points, 5 boards, 5 assists.
  • Nene - 25 points, 8 rebounds.

Things To Think About...
  • The way things are shaping up, Cleveland's got a cakewalk to the Finals. After they finish demolishing Atlanta, they'll get a banged up, worn out Boston team, or a fragile Orlando squad.
  • Real talk, Denver's the best team in the West right now. They are really, really, really good.
  • How about Nene this series. Granted, it's only been 2 games, but so far against Dallas: 24.5 points on 68% shooting. Erik Dampier where are you???

Support Sherm Radio!!!

Sherman Murdock is determined to get the job he wants, and he won't let a little thing like sleep get in his way.

Murdock, 21, a senior at Tennessee State University, has been broadcasting on TSU's student radio station, WTST 1600 AM, for more than 72 hours straight. And at press time Monday night he was still going strong.

His goal: Get a job before graduating on Saturday.

And he says he'll stay put at the university's radio station until he gets what he wants.

"I've been offered a production job but I want to be a broadcaster," Murdock said

Ideally, Murdock hopes to land a broadcasting job in a top 25 market — his first choices being No. 3 market Chicago, his hometown; No. 2 market Los Angeles; or No. 1 market New York.

"I believe the sky is the limit here," Murdock said. "I want to show people that if you have a dream, you should go forth and do everything in your power to reach it."

NBA Playoffs...

Round 2...

Scores...

Magic 95, Celtics 90
Rockets 100, Lakers 92

Top Performers...
  • Dwight Howard - 16 points, 22 boards, 3 MONSTER blocks.
  • Yao Ming - 28 points, 10 boards.
  • Kobe Bryant - 32 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals.

Things To Think About...
  • Orlando got the W, but it didn't look good. Why would a team that's up 30, with Dwight Howard in the middle, continue to come down and jack up 3s and quick shots? Stan Van Gundy?
  • Yao gets major respect points from last night. Not only was he killin', but he showed his toughness - the area of his game that's always been questioned. He definitely won me over with his refusal to go back to the trainer's room last night.
  • The Rockets are so tough and balanced. Everybody got it in last night, and Aaron Brooks is problem. Their D has been on point all season, but can they keep the offense going?
  • Both of last year's Finals' contenders are in trouble. Can Rondo and Ray Allen get their offense together for Game 2? Can the Lakers - not just Kobe - find a way to play with a sense of urgency, match Houston's toughness, and step it up on the defensive end?

Top Recruit John Wall May Be In Trouble...

John Wall, the country's top unsigned high school recruit in basketball, has been charged with misdemeanor breaking and entering after police found him walking out of a vacant house in North Carolina.

Wall, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound point guard ranked fifth in the ESPNU 100's Class of 2009, was cited in connection with an April 27 break-in of a Raleigh residence, the police said. Wall, a point guard at Raleigh Word of God, was voted The Associated Press men's prep basketball player of the year for North Carolina in March.

Police said an officer detained Wall, 18, after observing him leaving out the back of the home.

Two minors were also detained and charged in connection with the break-in.

Police said there was no forced entry and nothing to indicate anything was missing from the residence.

Wall has nine teams on his list of potential schools -- Florida, Baylor, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Memphis, Miami, North Carolina and NC State.

NBA Playoffs...

Rounds 1 & 2...

Scores...

Heat 78, Hawks 91 (Hawks won 4-3)
Mavs 95, Nuggets 109 (Denver leads 1-0)

Top Performers...
  • Joe Johnson - 27 points, 6-8 from Three, 5 boards, 5 steals, 4 assists.
  • Josh Smith - 21 points, 9 rebounds.
  • Dwayne Wade - 31 points.
  • Dirk Nowitzki - 28 points, 10 rebounds.
  • Carmelo Anthony - 23 points, 5 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks.

Things To Think About...
  • Granted, Cleveland ran through Detroit, but is anybody playing at a higher level that Denver? They're scorching right now...
Eastern Conference Playoff Outlook...

  • #4 Atlanta vs. #1 Cleveland - Cleveland steamrolled D-Town. Although Detroit was brutal, the Cavs were - and still are - on a mission. Atlanta, on the other hand, looked mediocre and inconsistent in their series against Miami. And they struggle mightily in the half-court. Although the Hawks have athletes to hang with Cleveland, they don't have the talent to do so. There's a difference. PREDICTION: Cavs in 5.

  • #3 Orlando vs. #2 Boston - This will be interesting. Boston's coming off a historic series against Chicago, surviving Game 7. They're banged up and drained. Orlando's fresh off of a series against Philly, in which, for all they did during the season, they pretty weak. They're battling injuries themselves, but not the way Boston is. The deciding factors: confidence and experience. As tight as the Bulls series was, Boston never looked shook. They'd been their before, surviving 3 game 7's in last years playoffs en route to the Championship. Orlando, however, has got to be questioning themselves. They struggled against Philly and Stan Van Gundy's a problem. I think the intangibles favor Boston. PREDICTION: Boston in 7 (I'd say 6, but Boston seems to like to keep things interesting).
