The New York Giants released Super Bowl hero Plaxico Burress on Friday, a little more than four months after the talented but troubled wide receiver accidentally shot himself in the thigh in a New York City nightclub.Burress' four-year tenure with the Giants was highlighted by a game-winning touchdown catch in the Super Bowl against the previously undefeated New England Patriots in February 2008, but it was also dogged by fines and suspensions.Burress' status has been uncertain since he shot himself in the thigh on Nov. 29 with an unlicensed gun he'd stuffed into his waistband. He faces a felony weapons charge that could put him in prison for at least 3½ years if convicted.Burress' case was adjourned on Tuesday while his attorneys and prosecutors worked on a possible plea agreement. He is due back in court on June 15.The 31-year-old, who was suspended by the Giants for the final four weeks of the season for conduct detrimental to the team and fined after the shooting, also faces possible NFL sanctions for violating its personal conduct policy.A senior Giants official told ESPN's Sal Paolantonio it had become clear in January that Burress didn't want to be in New York when agent Drew Rosenhaus sent an e-mail to the rest of the league saying Burress could be available in a trade.
LaMarcus Aldridge has the makings to be one of the top 4 or 5 bigs in The L in the next few years: 6-11, long, can run, and his midrange/fadeaway game is so sweet. While Greg Oden's been the focus of all the hype in Portland, LaMarcus may be the real post star. Aldridge has been consistent all season, averaging 18.6 in December and January, 18.7 in February, and 19.8 in March. He's been going insane over his last five though. Including Friday night's explosion for 35 and 18, he's put up 20+ four times, grabbed 12+ boards 3 times, and averaged 26.4 points and 10.8 rebounds. All while shooting 54%. He's gotten Rasheed Wallace comparisons, which may be warranted because of his long frame and the high release on his shot, but he's certainly got the potential to go far above and beyond what Sheed's done. Props to LaMarcus Aldridge.
Dwight Howard and the Magic smacked King James with one of the worst losses of his career, winning 116-87. Howard had 20 and 11 for the Magic, who outscored the Cavs 37-22 in the third quarter, and led by as much as 41. The Cavs loss is their second straight after losing to Washington Thursday night. They seemed to be in complete control of the East and poised for a season that won't end until June, but finishing the season strong is imperative. They've got 6 games left, including San Antonio tomorrow (April 5), Washington again, and Boston. Let's see what they can do.
The Lakers picked up a nice W, beating the Rockets 93-81, and closing within a game of Cleveland's league-leading record, 61-15. Kobe had a beautiful game in terms of efficiency, finishing with 20 points on 7-11 shooting, to go along with 7 assists. The Lakers have had complete control of the West for damn near the whole season, and they've been able to put it in cruise control. All season long, Kobe's stepped back, let the game come to him, and not forced things - which he's been criticized for for much of his career. With him and the Lakers so laid back it'll be interesting to see how they handle themselves in the playoffs. Does the huge lead mean they've got more in the tank than anybody, or will it come back to haunt them???...
The Miami Heat Dwayne Wade clinched his playoff berth with a 97-92 victory over the Bobcats.
Oklahoma sophomore forward Blake Griffin is the runaway choice as The Associated Press' college basketball player of the year.
The 6-foot-10 Griffin averaged 22.7 points and led the nation with 14.4 rebounds per game while shooting a Big 12 record 65.4 percent from the field. Griffin, the first Oklahoma player to win the award, led the Sooners to a 30-6 record and the regional finals of the NCAA tournament.
Coach Of The Year: Bill Self...
Bill Self, who led Kansas to the national championship last year and had the Jayhawks back in the title hunt this season, is The Associated Press' college basketball coach of the year.
Self, who will be presented the award later Friday, lost all five starters from the team that beat Memphis in the championship game, leaving him to work with two veterans and eight newcomers.
The Jayhawks finished 27-8 and reached the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament, winning the Big 12 title for the fifth straight season.
Nothing too crazy in The L Thursday night. Just 3 games on deck...Highlights: The Wizards upended the Cavs, 109-101, to snap their win streak at 13 games. The Wizards finally had a fresh roster, and had 6 guys finish in double-digits, including Agent 0, who had 11 points, 10 assists, and 6 boards in his second game back...Denver got their 50th win, beating Utah, 114-104. Meanwhile, the Jazz's road woes continued, as they fell to 14-23 away from Salt Lake City.
Former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, his brother, and a former top fundraiser were among six men indicted today on political corruption charges, the U.S. attorney's office in Chicago announced. In addition to Rob Blagojevich, 53, and fundraiser Christopher Kelly, 50, charged were Lon Monk, 50, a lobbyist and former Blagojevich chief of staff; John Harris, 47, also a former chief of staff to Blagojevich; and William Cellini, 74, a Springfield insider for decades.
The sweeping indictment comes four months after Blagojevich was arrested and charged with engaging in pay-to-play politics in a major federal complaint that accused him of trading state jobs, contracts and regulatory favors for campaign contributions.
The criminal complaint charged Blagojevich with attempting to sell the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama and seeking the firing of Tribune editorial writers in return for state help on the sale of Wrigley Field. The ballpark and newspaper are owned by Tribune Co. While those allegations are repeated in today's charges, the 19-count indictment also includes allegations that convicted insider Antoin "Tony" Rezko steered real estate commissions to former first lady Patti Blagojevich despite her performing no work and paid cash to Monk for a car and home improvements. The indictment claims Blagojevich attempted to extort a U.S. congressman for campaign cash by withholding a $2 million state grant to a public school in the congressman's district. All told, the ex-governor faces 16 felony counts, including racketeering conspiracy, wire fraud, extortion conspiracy and lying to federal agents. The government is seeking forfeiture of $188,370 from Blagojevich and will try to take his Ravenswood Manor home if needed.
"I'm saddened and hurt but I am not surprised by the indictment," Blagojevich said in a statement. "I am innocent. I now will fight in the courts to clear my name. I would ask the good people of Illinois to wait for the trial and afford me the presumption of innocence that they would give to all their friends and neighbors."
The Chicago Bears pulled the big upset Thursday afternoon by acquiring Denver Broncosquarterback Jay Cutler.
To acquire Cutler, the Bears had to give up quarterback Kyle Orton and first-round picks in 2009 (18th overall) and 2010, along with a third-round pick (84th overall) in 2009.
To complete the trade, the Broncos had to give back a fifth-round pick (140th overall) in 2009. That pick was acquired by the Broncos from the Seattle Seahawks in a trade for wide receiver Keary Colbert.
The Bears beat out the Redskins, Buccaneers, Lions, Titans and other teams to land the 25-year-old Pro Bowl quarterback. The Broncos had made it clear they were asking for at least two first-round choices.

Fake Or Real???
I don't know....
A.I.: "I'd retire before I do this again"
Looking into the future, Detroit Pistons guard Allen Iverson would rather retire than be a full-time reserve.Iverson returned to action this past weekend after missing 16 games with a back injury, and coach Michael Curry has used him off the bench the last three games.Iverson complained about his minutes on Tuesday after playing 18 against Cleveland. He admitted that he does not like the new role after playing 17 in a 111-98 loss to the Nets on Wednesday."I'm in a position now that I've never been in my whole life," Iverson said. "It's harder than I thought it would be. With the back injury, I have to sit out at the start, then go in, then sit again. It's tough to really get going. I take my hat off to the guys who can come off the bench and be effective. It's tough for me. I'm struggling with it."Iverson, who was acquired from Denver for Chauney Billups in an early season trade, said he would not accept being a reserve next season."I'd rather retire before I do this again," Iverson said. "I can't be effective playing this way. I'm not used to it. It's tough for me both mentally and physically. If I'm able to go out there, I should be able to get it done and I can't right now. It's my fault. I have to be able to overcome the adversity and do what I have to do. I just have to find a way to get it done. Not being 100 percent makes it harder and you can see that I'm not 100 percent."Iverson sat on the Pistons bench with his jersey off and his shin wrapped in ice early in the second half. The 33-year-old didn't put his jersey back on until he went into the game late in the third quarter.
I love A.I., but this is the exact reason why he'll probably never get a ring. It's one thing to have a poor attitude and perform at a high level, but A.I.'s having his worst season by far, and the numbers have shown that when he comes off the bench or doesn't play at all the Pistons, Rip Hamilton, and Rodney Stuckey are better off. I hate to see A.I. say this, because essentially, it shows that in his 12 year career, he still hasn't figured out how to be a team player.

Miami-Dade prosecutors on Wednesday charged Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte' Stallworth with DUI manslaughter, alleging the football player was driving drunk on the morning of March 14 when he struck and killed a pedestrian on Miami Beach.
Blood tests revealed Stallworth had a blood alcohol level of .126 after the 7 a.m. crash, according to documents filed in the clerk's office Wednesday.
Stallworth, 28, who has cooperated with authorities since the crash, is expected to surrender to authorities on Thursday morning.
Stallworth's attorney, Christopher Lyons, declined comment.
DUI manslaughter is a felony that carries a minimum of four years to a maximum 15 years in prison.
The police officer who pulled out his gun and threatened an NFL player with jail instead of allowing him inside a hospital where his mother-in-law was dying resigned Wednesday.
Officer Robert Powell had been placed on paid leave pending an investigation of the March 18 incident.
“I made this decision in the hope that my resignation will allow the Dallas Police Department, my fellow officers and the citizens of Dallas to better reflect on this experience, learn from the mistakes made, and move forward,” Powell said in a statement issued through his attorneys.
He had stopped Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats SUV outside Baylor Regional Medical Center in suburban Plano after the vehicle rolled through a red light.
The officer pulled out his gun and threatened Moats with jail as the player and his family pleaded to be allowed to go inside the hospital. Powell continued writing Moats a ticket and lecturing him even after a fellow officer confirmed that Moats’ mother-in-law was dying.
Jonetta Collinsworth, 45, died of breast cancer before Powell allowed Moats to go inside the hospital.
Powell’s resignation was first reported by Dallas-Fort Worth television station KTVT. He later issued an apology, and Moats said he would accept it.
Say it ain't so Coach Cal.... As much sense as it makes to see him do it, it still hard to believe. It really says a lot about the lure of the Kentucky program and tradition, if they can pry Coach Cal from Memphis - where he's gone to two Elite 8's, a National Championship game last year, and a Sweet Sixteen this season. In his 9 seasons at the helm of the Tigers program, Calipari had a remarkable record of 253-69. Moreover, he brought in the #1 player in the nation this year in Tyreke Evans this year, and Derrick Rose on '07-08. And he had Xavier Henry - and possibly John Wall - on boad for the '09-'10 season.
The greatest impact of his decision could very well be how it effects recruiting. Let's be honest, players tend to sign letters of intent to coaches rather than schools. It's not because of a schools academic reputation that a player is enamored with as much as it is the current coach and the promises they've made to them. Think Kansas G Tyshawn Taylor (who chose Marquette before Tom Crean's departure) or Villanova G Scottie Reynolds and Texas F Damion James (both headed to Oklahoma before Kelvin Sampson's left for Indiana). Thus, Henry, #4-ranked DeMarcus Cousins, and #6-ranked Wall may all be back on the market.
Many have pointed out that Calipari's never been a coach in a major conference in his career. At Memphis, his teams were clearly head and shoulders above the competition, and the same goes for his tenure at UMASS. But you gotta believe that he'll be a great success at Kentucky. He's already a excellent recruiter, and now he's got one of the nation's most decorated programs to back him. Plus, he's coming into a weak SEC, and still has Jodie Meeks - one of the nation's most prolific scorers - and Patrick Patterson. It'll be interesting to see if he can get something out of 6-6 Chicago G Deandre Liggins, who struggled mightily this year, but may thrive in Calipari's penetration heavy, European-style motion. Coach Cal is in a position to resurrect the a legendary Kentucky program, and have his name become next on a list that includes Adolph Rupp, Eddie Sutton, Rick Pitino, and Tubby Smith.
The Lakers lost their second straight - this time to the Charlotte Bobcats. Again. The Bobcats did the deed earlier this season in late January. So yes, the Bobcats pulled a season sweep of the Lakers. Charlotte held the Lakers to a mere 39% from the field, and KB24, who led the Lakers with 25, did so on just 11-28 shooting with his good friend Raja Bell defending him. The month of March was rough on the Mamba; he's shot 43 %, including games of 7-19, 5-19, 9-25, and 11-28...Meanwhile Cleveland won their 13th straight...The Hornets squeaked by Sacramento, 111-110, behind 40, 9, and 6 assists from David West, 15, 15, and 8 boards, from CP3, and a Rasaul Butler buzzer-beater. Vlade Divac had his jersey retired at halftime. BRUTAL.
