And Ya Say Chi City...

A 21-year-old man was shot in the buttocks outside the downtown House of Blues after a hip-hop show.
That shooting happened just before 4 a.m., as more than 1,000 people were leaving the concert venue at 329 N. Dearborn.  A show by hip-hop acts Drake and Sly Polaroid began at 11:30 p.m. Friday.

The victim was involved in an "altercation" with someone who displayed a handgun, then shot the man and fled, said Chicago Police spokesman John Mirabelli.  The victim, who was not identified, was listed in stable condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.  Detectives are investigating the case, and no one was in custody as of Saturday evening, police said.

Swizz Beats Officially Dating Alicia Keys...

Hip-hop maestro Swizz Beats is finally admitting that he and Alicia Keys are an item — but he wishes his estranged wife, Mashonda, would leave the Grammy winner out of their divorce.

For months now, Swizz has been trying to keep his thing with Alicia on the down-low. But he doesn't leave much doubt about who owns his heart on Drake's new "Best I Ever Had" remix.

Wake up in the morning and my baby cooked me breakfast, A's naked wearing nothing on but a necklace …

Yeah, she say she wanna treat me like a king; I get big gifts so the money ain't a damn thing

She gave me a party at the Guggenheim … What's next? The ring? The baby? She really loves me!

Swizz tells us that, yes, he's in love with Keys and, yes, she did give him a birthday party at that museum.

"But we're nowhere near ready for a baby or a ring," laughs Swizz, aka Kasseem Dean. "This whole song is not about Alicia. The part about her cooking breakfast for me naked — she never done that for me." Damn.

Swizz didn't want to talk about Keys till now because, he says, "What we have is so precious." He also felt it would aggravate Mashonda, who's also a singer.

He may have been right. "When he told Mashonda he was dating Alicia, I think she got jealous," says a friend of the couple.

Having filed for divorce in February, Mashonda is seeking interim support for their 2-year-old son, Kasseem Jr., arguing that Swizz has slashed his payments.

"He's been tightening the screws on her," says a friend of Moshanda. "It's becoming intolerable. Meanwhile, she's seen the charges for jewelry he's bought Alicia in France."

During the winter, the heat in Mashonda's Westchster mansion went out. "Swizz wouldn't repair her heat," says her friend. But a pal of Swizz argues, "The house is 30,000 square feet. The heat didn't work in one wing, not where Mashonda and Dean slept. Swizz had been paying all of their bills. On top of that, he was giving her $5,000 a week. His advisers felt that was too much, so now he pays her $3,500 a month, on top of the bills.

Full story here.

I hate you Swizz Beats...

P.S. How about the fact that he's shelling out damn near 6 figures to Mashonda. That's crazy.

NBA Playoffs...

Round 2...

Scores...

Nuggets 106, Mavs 105 (Nuggets Lead 3-0)
Cavs 97, Hawks 82 (Cavs Lead 3-0)

Top Performers...
  • Carmelo Anthony - 31 points, 8 rebounds, game-winner.
  • Chauncey Billups - 32 points.
  • Dirk Nowitzki - 33 points, 16 boards.
  • LeBron James - 47 points, 12 boards, 8 dimes.

Things To Think About...
  • Granted, the refs failed to call a foul on Antoine Wright. But: 1. As Hubie Brown said, why did he stop playing if the ref hadn't blown the whistle? 2. Why wouldn't he hack the sh** out of Melo, and make it a clear cut foul? 3. How about manning up and playing D. How can a team be upset at the refs for not calling a foul on them? That doesn't even make sense.
  • The Cavs D is nasty. As much of a freak as Bron is, the D may be the Cavs' most dangerous aspect. There have been so many times this season, including last night, when they'll be losing, and, the next time you look up, there up by double digits and in complete control. That's a product of great defense.
Other League News: Suns Name Gentry Head Coach...

The Phoenix Suns are sticking with coach Alvin Gentry.

The Suns removed the interim tag attached to his title since he took over the club in February.

Suns president Steve Kerr made the announcement on Saturday, calling Gentry "the right man to lead our team into the future."

Gentry took over the struggling Suns on Feb. 16 after coach Terry Porter was fired just four months into his first season with the club.

The Suns failed to make the playoffs despite the coaching change.

Rev Run's Son, JoJo, Caught Rollin Up...

The son of legendary rapper Joseph "Run" Simmons of Run DMC was arrested for possession of marijuana on Friday night, according to published reports.

Joseph "JoJo" Simmons Jr. allegedly bought weed and was seen rolling the illegal substance in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, according to gossip news site tmz.com.

Sources within the police department told the site that the 19-year-old was inside a car when he was apprehended.

The sources also charge that he tried to escape by reversing and almost struck a police vehicle.

Simmons Jr. was charged with resisting arrest, attempted reckless endangerment, and criminal use of drug paraphenalia in addition to the possession charge.

No statement has been issued by the Simmons family or a representative.

Simmons, Jr. stars on the show "Run's House" with his father and the rest of the family.
I'm not even mad at him. He'll be aight...

NBA Playoffs...

Round 2...

Scores...

Celtics 96, Magic 117 (Magic Lead 2-1)
Rockets 108, Lakers 94 (Lakers Lead 2-1)

Top Performers...
  • Dwight Howard - 17 points (on 7-8 shooting), 14 boards, 5 blocks.
  • Rashard Lewis - 28 points, 6 rebounds.
  • Paul Pierce - 27 points, 6 assists, 3 boards, 3 steals.
  • Kobe Bryant - 33 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks, 2 steals.
  • Ron Artest - 25 points, 6 rebounds.

Things To Think About...
  • The formulas for Boston and L.A. seem clear: Ray Allen must shoot well for Boston to win. Last night: 8 points, 3-13 from the field, 0-5 from deep. In L.A., Kobe must take the initiative  from the get-go (i.e. Games 2 & 3) in order for the Lakers to win. That "team-first" mentality was great during the year, but its the playoffs now. I think he's figured that out...
  • The NBA's back. If you can't tell, just observe the physical play.
Former Detroit Piston Coach, Chuck Daly, Passes Away...

Daly was voted one of the 10 greatest coaches of the NBA's first half-century in 1996, two years after being inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He was the first coach to win both an NBA title and Olympic gold.

In The News...

Dave Bing Wins Detroit Mayoral Election...

Basketball legend Dave Bing was elected Tuesday as Detroit's mayor through the end of the year, sweeping the incumbent from office in the city with myriad problems.

"The real work starts now," Bing said to loud cheers during his victory speech.

"What we will bring ... is efficiency, transparency, honesty and integrity back to the mayor's office," he said.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Bing had 52.3 percent of the vote, or 49,054 votes, to 47.7 percent, or 44,770 votes, for Cockrel. Both are Democrats.

Bing, 65, will be mayor through 2009, serving the balance of the term that belonged to Democrat Kwame Kilpatrick, who resigned in September and went to jail after admitting he lied during a civil trial to cover up an affair with his chief of staff.

Bing must run again in the regular Aug. 4 nonpartisan primary and win the Nov. 3 general election to hold the mayor's seat for a full four years.

Full story here.

This is huge for the D. Check out the Jemele Hill story I posted last week about Bing's background and his quest to fix Detroit.

Man Who Robbed Antoine Walker Gets 21 Years...

A West Side man was sentenced to 21 years in prison Tuesday for ambushing former NBA star Antoine Walker in his River North garage before tying him up with duct tape and robbing him.

Antoine Larkins, 30, is also accused of robbing the New York Knicks' Eddy Curry in a similar stickup at Curry's Burr Ridge home. That case is still pending.

In the July 9, 2007, holdup of Walker, Larkins and three other men were charged with armed robbery, kidnapping and home invasion.

On Tuesday, Larkins, of the 1300 block of South Washtenaw, pleaded guilty to the home invasion charges in a deal reached with prosecutors, Cook County assistant state's attorney Andreana Turano said. Judge Kenneth Wadas issued the sentence. In March, he sentenced Larkins' co-defendant, Gregory Reedfields, 24, to four years in prison.

Also charged were Phillip Allison, 30, and Demorris Hill, 27. Their cases are still pending.

In the holdup, Walker, then with the Miami Heat, pulled into the garage of his $4 million home and was met by the masked robbers. The Mount Carmel grad was ordered out of his SUV. As he opened the door, $3,000 in cash that was apparently sitting on his lap fell out and was grabbed by Larkins, authorities said.

Hill and Larkins marched Walker at gunpoint to an upstairs bedroom while Allison waited downstairs to nab an assistant of Walker's, authorities said.

The gunmen forced Walker to reveal where his money and jewelry were kept, duct-taped him to his assistant, and put them in a closet, authorities said.

They were told to count to 100 before making a move. Allison returned to the bedroom twice -- once to make them restart their 100-count, and a second time to ask how to drive Walker's Mercedes.

Allison allegedly stole the Mercedes and put the SUV's $8,000 rims on his girlfriend's 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, authorities said.

I've got a couple questions here: What fool has 3 stacks sitting on their lap while they're driving? And what fool goes and puts the stolen rims on his girl's whip? WOW...

Top Recruit John Wall May Be In Trouble...

John Wall, the country's top unsigned high school recruit in basketball, has been charged with misdemeanor breaking and entering after police found him walking out of a vacant house in North Carolina.

Wall, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound point guard ranked fifth in the ESPNU 100's Class of 2009, was cited in connection with an April 27 break-in of a Raleigh residence, the police said. Wall, a point guard at Raleigh Word of God, was voted The Associated Press men's prep basketball player of the year for North Carolina in March.

Police said an officer detained Wall, 18, after observing him leaving out the back of the home.

Two minors were also detained and charged in connection with the break-in.

Police said there was no forced entry and nothing to indicate anything was missing from the residence.

Wall has nine teams on his list of potential schools -- Florida, Baylor, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Memphis, Miami, North Carolina and NC State.
Sounds like A.I....

King James Named MVP!!!

The King was officially anointed today. At 24, he's the second-youngest to be named NBA MVP. It was certainly well-deserved, as he led the Cavs to the best record in the L, were 39-1 (I'm not counting the game he didn't play against them) at the crib, all while averaging 28 points, 7.6 boards, and 7.2 assists. LBJ ran away with the voting, bringing in 109 of 121 first-place votes. Kobe was second, followed, by D. Wade, then CP3.

I swear he's not human.

Carl Crawford Racks Up 6 Stolen Bases...

In the Rays 5-3 win over the Red Sox, Carl Crawford tied the modern-day MLB record for most stolen bases in a game. And he made it looks so easy. A couple times Jason Varitek didn't even bother throwing. Crawford was 4-4, with an RBI and and 2 runs scored. Crawford's batting .317 on the season, and leads  the MLB in stolen bases with 17. Carl Crawford is that deal...

Sears Tower To Get Glass Skydeck....

Sears Tower -- and it's still called that for the time being -- will invite its Skydeck visitors to enjoy a view usually reserved for window-washers and superheroes.

It'll be a walk on the high side as visitors on the observation deck step into glass enclosures that extend 4.3 feet beyond the building. Beneath their feet in dizzyness-inducing splendor will be the city itself, 103 stories below, with an inch and a half of glass between person and pavement.

The attraction, called the Ledge, should open by early June and is part of a multimillion dollar renovation of the tourist spaces at the nation's tallest building, said Randy Stancik, Skydeck general manager.

He said the Ledge was inspired by glass-floored thrills at the Grand Canyon and Toronto's CN Tower. The plan is to attract more Skydeck visitors, especially jaded locals who haven't visited the tower in years.

"This definitely will be something new to take from the experience, a new Skydeck memory," Stancik said. About 1.3 million people visit the Skydeck every year.

Stancik realizes the illusion of a mid-air suspension isn't for everyone. But the daredevils will be enclosed by glass.

Seeing foreheads pressed to the Skydeck windows, Stancik knew people want to look down as well as out.

The four enclosures are on the west side of the tower so you can look straight down to the ground. On other sides, downward views are interrupted by setbacks from the wider floors below.

The enclosures are retractable: they move inside so window-washing equipment isn't obstructed. Stancik said the Ledges will be available in all kinds of weather.

The Ledges are included in Skydeck admission, which jumps a buck today to $14.95 for ages 12 and up. It's $10.50 for kids 3 to 11. The price increase is in preparation for a Skydeck upgrade that also includes new exhibits highlighting Chicago's history, culture and tourism attractions, including a display that lets viewers rise the equivalent of 103 stories above Wrigley Field.

The Skydeck changes are part of a plan to make the iconic building more profitable.

Later this summer, the name will change to the Willis Tower, for a global insurance firm that leased space in the building.

The owners also are considering painting or recladding the building in silver to give it a contemporary look. Also under discussion is building a hotel next to the tower.

An inch and a 1/2 of glass between you and a 103-story fall. I wish I would...

Jayson Williams Stunned With Taser

Jayson Williams was stunned with a Taser by police in his swank hotel suite Monday after the reportedly suicidal ex-NBA star resisted attempts by officers to take him to a hospital.

Police were called to the hotel in lower Manhattan's Battery Park City around 4 a.m. when a female friend reported the former New Jersey Nets player was acting suicidal.

When officers arrived, the 6-foot-10, 325-pound Williams appeared drunk and agitated, police said. There were empty bottles of prescription drugs strewn around his disheveled hotel suite and several suicide notes.

Officers with the Emergency Services Unit, an elite team trained to deal with emotionally disturbed people, responded and stunned Williams with a Taser after he resisted attempts to be hospitalized.

It's the latest in a series of public troubles for the 41-year-old former NBA All-Star, who played nine seasons with the Nets and the Philadelphia 76ers before retiring in 2000.

He was convicted in 2004 of trying to cover up the shooting death of his hired driver Costas "Gus" Christofi at his mansion in Alexandria Township, N.J., in February 2002.

He was acquitted of aggravated manslaughter, but the jury deadlocked on a reckless manslaughter count. A retrial is pending and he has been free on bail since the shooting.

Williams' wife filed divorce papers this year claiming he was abusive, adulterous and had a drug problem. Proceedings continue.

Williams' manager told the New York Daily News outside a Manhattan hospital that the athlete was on the mend.

"Jayson is doing fine. He said he was fine," Akhtar Farzaie told the newspaper. "All of us are here to be by his side as friends."

Tony Allen Receiving Death Threats...

Security around Tony Allen was increased Thursday at United Center after a Chicago man issued a death threat against the Boston Celtics guard, The Boston Globe and Yahoo! Sports reported on Thursday.

The Celtics and Bulls had extra security around their benches during Game 3 of the first-round playoff series to keep an eye on Allen. A source said the added security presence was a precautionary measure, according to the Globe.

Allen, who is from Chicago, played nine minutes on Thursday night and did not score in the team's 107-86 win against the Bulls.

Sources told the Globe that Allen has been receiving threats in Chicago for some time. Allen also was threatened prior to a March 17 game at Chicago. He didn't make that trip, however, because of a thumb injury.

"Is that what you're going to write about? Is that what you're going to write about?" Allen said when asked about the threats, then walked away, the Globe reported.

"It's a private team matter," Celtics president Rich Gotham told Yahoo! Sports. "It's just not something that we are going to talk about."

Celtics coach Doc Rivers told the Globe: "It's a team matter. We will keep it in house."

The NBA also declined comment to Yahoo! Sports.

In April 2007, Allen was found not guilty of aggravated battery in a Chicago court. That charge was connected to a fight in August 2005 outside a Chicago restaurant.

Wow. That's definitely some Chicago shit, too...
