Finally we have a definite best team in the Big East - for today, at least. #1 UCONN took care of #7 Louisville - IN Louisville - 68-51 in their first game at the top of the polls. The Huskies got major production from 4 of their 5 starters: 18 and 7 rebounds from Jeff Adrien. Center Hasheem Thabeet had 14, 11, 4 blocks, and a countless number of shots altered. 14 points from Jerome Dyson, and 11 points and 8 dimes from A.J. Price. And UCONN didn't scrape to a win; it was in Johnny Cochran- convincing fashion, and over, arguably, the hottest team in the country, as the Cards came in riding a 9-game win streak. Although Terrence Williams went off for 26, he was the only Card in double figures. The Huskies defense, anchored by Thabeet, was unbelievably stingy, and, as a team, Louisville shot 22-64 from the field - 34%.
In every sport, each week presents a new matchup that can be dubbed the "Game of the Year". Last week was Duke/Wake, but today trumped that. In a game of such large magnitude, UCONN more than proved they deserve the #1 ranking. Thus far, the Big East season has been riddled with parity, but slowly, the cream's beginning to rise to the top. Syracuse and Georgetown have fallen off. Notre Dame's schedule is brutal - 5 straight losses to ranked Big East opponents, and UCLA on Saturday. Villanova's good, but not that good. So now we're left with Pitt, UCONN, Louisville, and Marquette.
For now UCONN's the "Beast In The East", but they've got a 2 games against Pitt, plus games against Syracuse and Notre Dame, and a trip to Marquette. This should be good.
This weeks new Top 25 rankings. As you know, UCONN's the new #1. As expected, G'Town dropped from the rankings, as did Notre Dame.
Also, ESPN's Bracketbuster's matchups were announced.
